Overlays randomly extend and won't split

Hi, I seem to be having a problem where sometimes I open up one of my projects, and I notice that an overlay (noticed text so far) has automatically extended itself beyond where I had originally trimmed it. When I go to split it, it places the other half down below but basically is just duplicating it. I have attached a picture as it may explain much better.
